The new world class Eccles Theater could soon put Salt Lake City at the forefront of the theater world
Downtown Salt Lake City is about to do something BIG in the world of Broadway shows. In October 2016, the George S. and Dolores Dore Eccles Theater will finally be open. What kind of shows will the Eccles Theater offer? Well… ever heard of a little Broadway show called Hamilton? Yes… THAT Hamilton. The Tony Award winner for Best Musical (and a ton of others). As Ron Burgundy says, “It’s kind of a big deal… people know it.” As of the time I write this, Hamilton has never been performed outside of New York City. Until the show comes to the Eccles Theater in Salt Lake in 2017!
“Salt Lake City will be one of the first cities in North America to see Hamilton outside of Broadway. This is thanks to everything our community has done to realize the dream of opening the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Theater,” MagicSpace Entertainment COO Steve Boulay said in a statement emailed to FOX 13.
The awesomeness and epic-ness of the Eccles Theater doesn’t stop there, either. With the Broadway at the Eccles series, Hamilton is just one of many big name Broadway productions that are coming to Salt Lake during the 2017-2018 season. Salt Lake residents will be able to take a short trip over to the Eccles Theater and enjoy blockbuster Broadway shows like Kinky Boots, the Book of Mormon, Dirty Dancing, Newsies, Cinderella, and many more… all from the comfort of their own city. How freakin’ cool is that!? Broadway’s Best are coming to Salt Lake City… they’re coming to US!
It’s no secret that Utahns love Broadway shows. It seems like every time a Broadway show visit Utah, it sells out. It’s not hard to imagine the Eccles Theater quickly becoming THE place to go in Salt Lake City. However it won’t just be Broadway shows performing at the Eccles Theater. The majority of shows will be local shows and events, along with other national productions. The sky is the limit really, with 2,500 seats in the Delta Performance Hall, it will be bigger than the Capital Theater. Here’s what the main Delta Performance Hall is expected to look like…
If you have grown up in Salt Lake City, you’ve probably been to Abravanel Hall and the Capital Theater. Both are absolutely incredible, iconic performance centers in Utah. Now with the addition of the Eccles Theater, Salt Lake has so many world class venues to choose from when booking plays, performances, and shows.
Located in the heart of downtown at 131 S. Main Street, the theater will be very easy to get to via Trax, and other public transportation. The City Creek parking complex will be available for those who prefer to drive themselves to the theater.
The 6 story tall lobby of the Theater was intentionally designed as a public area, part of a walkway that designers expect will be used by pedestrians looking for a shortcut through the block and those who will work in the office building being constructed next door. In addition, there is a café in the theater’s lobby that will be open for breakfast and lunch.
With all the new development going on downtown, some say there is a new “Theater District” being formed. The Eccles Theater joins the proposed Regent Street Hotel near Gallivan Plaza, the Capital Theater, and Abravanel Hall in this so called Theater District.
