Less than 15 miles of Snowbird and Alta and about 20 minutes from Brighton and Solitude ski resorts in neighboring Big Cottonwood Canyon, Holladay gives visitors access to nearly 7,000 acres of ski terrain buried under 500 inches of snow each year. That's just in-bounds; there are plenty of backcountry routes in the canyons. Visitors can drive to the resorts or take public buses, which service both canyons. The one disadvantage of staying in Holladay is that the canyon roads may close after major storms for avalanche and clearing work, delaying access to the ski resorts. OUTDOOR RECREATION While the area around Holladay is mainly known for skiing, many other outdoor activities are available. When the snow melts and the vegetation greens, both Cottonwood Canyons, along with neighboring canyons and wilderness areas, host a variety of recreational activities. You'll find both cross-country and lift-served mountain biking, including on the the Wasatch Crest Trail, one of the most renowned trails in northern Utah. Numerous hiking trails, rock climbing routes and camping abound. The town advertises 30 mountain bike trails within 30 minutes and 100 within an hour.
